Before and After – Shiplap Family Room Makeover

shiplap family room makeover

Today on the blog I am sharing with you all our before and after our family room makeover. This post has been a long time coming and a labor of love and I couldn’t be happier with the end result. The brightness the shiplap adds to the room and the pop of the german schmear gave it the change I was hoping for.

The family room before adding shiplap.

This was one of the few rooms of the house that still had wood accents and chair rail pretty much everywhere it could be fit within the room. I love wood accents but it was too much wood and made the room feel dark and small. I did like the wood beams on the ceiling but wasn’t in love with them and I also didn’t love the “Y’s” that went up to the beam; it felt too much like an old western style which was not the look I was hoping to achieve. Tim didn’t love the beams AT ALL so we chose to remove them.  🙂

Can you believe how different this room looks from before and after?! It’s amazing what a little bit of white paint can do to a room.

I know white isn’t everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to decorating but I love it for that farmhouse look and its versatility and ability to change out color patterns and schemes easily.

From the moment we saw this house, I knew I wanted to shiplap our family room and brighten it up. Living in rental houses our whole marriage made it impossible to ever be able to do actual shiplap within a house so I was going to jump on it as soon as I could! The fireplace is large and a dark red brick with gray grout lines and it needed a change to help dress it up and bring it more into focus and I couldn’t think of anything better than a german schmear. Let’s just say I smile each time I walk into this room now. 🙂

As you can see, I photographed during 4th of July which is why there are flags and lemons everywhere. 🙂

Yes, I know I only have one curtain panel up, haha! I lost a panel in our move and due to the pandemic and every thing closing I haven’t been able to get a replacement because they are out of stock and on back order. I’m choosing to enjoy the room and not fret over a simple curtain panel.

No more “Y’s” on the beams! Just removing those boards opened the family room up even more. Eventually we plan to replace these old worn beams with new wood beams and wood beam wrap.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post and it has inspired you to create a beautiful home no matter how fancy it may be. There are so many things in this room that are little details that I would still love to change but I choose not to get caught up in those details. For now, I would love to invite you in to stay and make you a cup of coffee as we chat about life and share each others company and friendship.

If you are like I once was and in a home that can’t be renovated or don’t want to spend much to make a change check out my post My DIY and Review of Magnolia Home Shiplap Wallpaper where share how we hung shiplap wallpaper in our rental house.
